This Grade 4 reading textbook is part of the “La Boîte aux Lettres” collection.
“La Boîte aux Lettres” for Grade 4 is a comprehensive method for learning French. It builds on our methods from previous grades. The spirit, content, and pedagogical practices are thus reframed and extended. Our teaching methods emphasize oral expression, which forms the foundation for learning to read and write.
The “La Boîte aux Lettres” collection for Grade 4 is based on the following methodological principles:
- Priority given to oral expression.
- Class projects to enable group work, interdisciplinarity, open-mindedness, and collaboration.
- Interesting and illustrated narrative texts.
- Perfecting reading skills.
- Initiation to the internal organization of the texts.
- Focusing on injunctive-prescriptive and informative texts.

- Illustrative supports in the margin of the texts explain difficult words.
- Insistence on vocabulary development in every unit.
The Grade 4 “La Boîte aux Lettres” collection comprises the following three components: a reading textbook, an expression workbook, and a grammar workbook.
Grade 4 Reading Textbook
This Grade 4 reading textbook of the “La Boîte aux Lettres” collection is divided into 10 themes. Each theme comprises two units.
A) Each unit presents three activities:
- Two pages are devoted to oral expression. The activities provided here precede and extend the reading text. You will find:
– In each unit:

- An illustration that prepares students to read, with questions.
- Pictures to help understand words and sentence structures.
- A role-play activity (dialogue).
– In each theme:

- A lesson on expression techniques.
- An oral and writing expression exercise.
- Two other pages present a reading text. This text is accompanied by drawings that illustrate difficult words and by comprehension questions. You will also find activities that improve reading aloud and text organization skills.
- A phonics section allows the review of the phonemes and graphemes; therefore, previously acquired knowledge is reinforced.
B) Four other activities are presented alternately:
- A vocabulary lesson to introduce words of the same family, synonyms, homonyms, etc.
- An injunctive or informative text. Activities also follow this text.
- An illustration that encourages the reuse of words and structures of the theme.
- Finally, a world openness documentary text related to the theme.
Also, each theme of the reading textbook concludes with poems.
Finally, a QR code is printed on the first page of the textbook. Children can thus listen to:
- Role-play activities.
- Phonics.
